A Journey through my Life - Peter Sculthorpe with the Goldner Quartet
Perhaps more than any Australian composer, Peter Sculthorpe has profoundly impacted our nation’s musical identity. His status as a 'National Living Treasure' attests to the richness of his body of work, including an amazing 18 string quartets, and to the incredible legacy of music he has created for our country.
The Goldner String Quartet has worked closely with Peter over many years, recording and performing all his string quartets, some commissioned especially for us. In Peter’s own words, ‘the journey of my life can best be traced through my compositions for string quartet’ and we have wanted for quite some time to capture this journey on film. With the renowned filmmaker John Weiley (Antarctica, Solarmax) on board, this dream is now closer to becoming reality.
As the first stage in the project, the Goldner String Quartet performed a selection of Peter’s string quartet repertoire in the professional recording studio of Trackdown at Fox Studios, Sydney, on 29 April 2012 (Peter’s 83rd birthday). These were interspersed with Peter talking about his inspiration for, and recollections of, each composition, all of which were captured on film to form the musical basis of the documentary.
The Goldners have received confirmation from the ABC that they will broadcast nationally the documentary. This commitment comes with some very welcome funding towards post-production, and in turn, unlocks substantial Screen Australia funds towards our project, which was contingent upon a broadcast deal being reached.
Most importantly, the funding from both Screen Australia and the ABC was only forthcoming if we raised a minimum of $100,000 towards the project ourselves. We are delighted that thanks to the generous contributions of our donors, matched dollar-for-dollar by our Founding Co-Principals, Kim Williams and Tony Berg, we have been able to reach this target. Without these very vital contributions, the documentary would not be on its way to becoming a reality.
With all the pieces of the funding puzzle now complete, our producer/director John Weiley is in the process of assembling the concert footage and collating additional visual imagery relevant to each work.
The next exciting component of the Goldner String Quartet's Sculthorpe project is using the documentary as the basis for producing a multi-media concert version that we will tour nationally and internationally, thereby bringing Peter’s music to an even wider audience. Our wish is that ours and future generations experience the unique creative insights that only Peter can share through his music and storytelling. As the project continues to progress, we invite you to keep up to date with developments by checking back here regularly.
