The Goldner String Quartet is currently undertaking a project to perform in all six of Sydney’s Sister Cities; Portsmouth (England), Wellington (NZ), Guangzhou (China), Florence (Italy), San Francisco (USA) and Nagoya (Japan).
Each program will be individually tailored to the respective Sister-City and will include a work by a composer significant to that country or a collaboration with a locally based performer. All concerts will also feature at least one Australian composition, further enhancing Sydney’s ties with each Sister City.

Portsmouth Guildhall, UK
Sydney and Portsmouth were proclaimed Sister Cities on 10 December 1984 in recognition of the historic ties between the two cities dating from 1787 when eleven ships under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, Royal Navy, sailed from Portsmouth harbour to found the colony of New South Wales.
The Goldner String Quartet will perform at the Portsmouth Guildhall in a program specifically designed to showcase these ties.
Wellington (New Zealand)
7.30pm Monday 30 September 2013
In celebration of the 21st anniversary of Wellington and Sydney’s sister-city relationship, the Goldner String Quartet and Chamber Music New Zealand have teamed up in co-commissioning NZ composer Gareth Farr to write a new work for string quartet.
The Quartet will premiere the work during their 2013 national tour of NZ, prior to performing the work during forthcoming Australian engagements.
“I love writing string quartets and it’s a real thrill for me to go back to that. It’s also exciting to be working with the Goldner String Quartet for the first time, and to be chosen to celebrate this international connection between Wellington and Sydney – both cities which I absolutely love.” Gareth Farr – composer
